\"Lions, Tigers, and VAs, Oh My!”

There I was, like everyone else, caught off-guard as the pandemic reshaped life as we knew it. Overnight, the world shifted, and suddenly, routines and plans were replaced with a strange, uncertain silence. The days that followed were filled with fear, confusion, and a gnawing question: What now?

The Shock and the Shift

Like most people, I was worried about the future—wondering what "normal" would mean and if it would ever feel close to what it used to. Jobs were vanishing, and there seemed to be no safe space outside. And yet, I was determined to keep going, to find a new way to thrive, even if I didn't yet know how.

I began hearing about the rise of virtual work and wondered, Could I find my footing in this new world? I had no experience as a virtual assistant, but the idea of working remotely, with just a laptop and an internet connection, sparked something in me.

Stepping into the Unknown

With equal parts fear and excitement, I dove into the virtual world. I scoured the web, reading up on what it meant to be a Virtual Assistant (VA) and discovering a hidden community of people who had already turned remote work into their lifestyle. But it wasn’t all smooth sailing. I faced the hard truth of learning new tools, juggling time zones, and, most of all, doubting if I was even cut out for this new life.

But there was a strange thrill in each new challenge, as if I were crafting a new identity piece by piece. I was no longer confined by the boundaries of traditional workspaces; I could be anywhere and still connect with people everywhere.

The First Client—And the Rollercoaster of Realizations

Then came the moment that changed everything: my first client. I can still remember the nerves of that initial call. Will they take me seriously? Do I know enough? Can I meet their expectations? I soon discovered that clients, too, were adapting, often feeling just as vulnerable and eager to connect. Together, we built trust, one task at a time.

Suddenly, “working from home” became more than just staying safe; it was an opportunity to build my own path. Each new client became a milestone, a confidence booster that said, Yes, you belong here.

Falling in Love with the Process

With each project, I learned something new—not just about being a VA but about myself. I learned that I could thrive outside my comfort zone, that I could build meaningful relationships virtually, and that this "job" was shaping into something more like a passion. The boundaries between work and life blurred in the best possible way.

Remote work, once just a lifeline during a crisis, had evolved into my career and my community. And just as unexpectedly as the pandemic arrived, I realized I didn’t want to go back to “normal.” Working from home, setting my own schedule, and feeling empowered by my own skills—this was my new normal.

 Embracing the Freedom—and the Challenges

Today, I can’t imagine returning to an office. I love being location-free, and more importantly, I love being the boss of me. There’s a sense of freedom that comes with creating your own space and setting your own rules. Sure, some days are tough. Sometimes, the work can feel overwhelming, and motivation can dip when challenges pile up.

But I’ve learned to give myself grace, to breathe, and to start again with a clearer mind. The moments that test me are the same ones that remind me why I chose this path—to be resilient, independent, and in control of my future.

And for anyone wondering if it’s possible to build something meaningful from the unexpected, I’m living proof that the answer is yes.
